[COCONUT WATER IS HEALTHY] -- 2 min read

Hello Warriors!

Welcome to the “From the Fight” blog. The past several weeks we have been talking about what it means to be “healthy” holistically in society. Today we will be discussing coconut water and why it is healthy.

Coconut water has been around for a long time, however, only recently did it become a trendy beverage. It is very tasty and refreshing but not many people know that it is loaded with several important nutrients, including minerals that most people don't get enough of.

What is coconut water?

Naturally refreshing, coconut water has a sweet, nutty taste. It contains easily digested carbohydrate in the form of sugar and electrolytes. Not to be confused with high-fat coconut milk or oil, coconut water is a clear liquid in the fruit’s center that is tapped from young, green coconuts. It has fewer calories, less sodium, and more potassium than a sports drink. Like most things, enjoy coconut water in moderation as drinking too much of it can add on a lot of extra calories to your total caloric intake.

Why is it healthy?

There are many health benefits to consuming coconut water:

1. It is a good source of several nutrients. Coconut water is found in young coconuts and is a good source of fiber, vitamin C and several important minerals.

2. May have antioxidant properties. Studies have shown that coconut water contains antioxidants that protect cells from damaging free radicals.

3. May have benefits against diabetes. Research has shown that coconut water can lower blood sugar levels and improve other health markers in diabetic animals, research still needs to be done on humans. It's also a good source of magnesium, which may increase insulin sensitivity and reduce blood sugar levels.

4. It’s beneficial after exercise. Coconut water may be the perfect beverage for restoring hydration and replenishing electrolytes lost during exercise.

And while controlled studies still need to be done on the effects of coconut water for humans, the evidence so far has been promising. Overall, coconut water is an all-natural way to hydrate, reduce sodium, and add potassium to diets. Most Americans don’t get enough potassium in their diets because they don’t eat enough fruits, vegetables, or dairy, so coconut water can help fill in the nutritional gaps.
